I hope this newsletter finds you well and you’re enjoying the summer months. At Aspire, we’ve continued to implement our strategic plan in order to meet our overarching goals – one being impact. Put simply, impact is the result of our work facilitating change in the lives of the people we serve. If their lives are better today than they were yesterday, then we have made an impact. The beauty of this is we have an opportunity to have an impact every moment of every day. Here lies the connection between serving, person-centeredness, and impact.
Disability Pride Month: An Opportunity for Celebration & Advocacy
Since 1990, Disability Pride Month has celebrated disabled people, their identities and cultures, and their contributions to society. The Pride movement promotes the understanding that disability is a natural part of human diversity. We've come a long way to ensure equal rights and opportunities for those with disabilities, but there's still work to do!
Aspire is pleased to share The Big Ask, a podcast where we challenge ourselves to explore complex questions that face providers of services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the first episode, we ask, ‘how can we be artisans in an industrial world?’
There’s a common saying that when you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism. What happens when the teachers supporting a child with autism lose sight of that? They make assumptions that just aren’t helpful. That’s what happened to Tim Thornton back in fourth grade when his family moved to Connecticut.
Whether you’ve been thinking about it for a while or you're just starting your research, Aspire recently created the ‘Is Becoming a Shared Living Provider Right for Me?’ eBook to give insight and guidance to those with an interest in opening their home.
